Job Description

A Porter, or Hotel Porter, is a person who provides general customer service in a hotel, resort or guesthouse. Their duties include greeting guests, carrying their luggage and showing them to their rooms.

Porter duties and responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of a Porter vary depending on the size of the establishment and the position. Head Porters, for instance, oversee a team of Porters and door staff and have duties like training and disciplining staff and organising the work schedule. In some establishments, Porters may also perform basic maintenance duties like changing plugs or replacing light bulbs. Some other day-to-day tasks may include:

  • Assisting in keeping the lobby and other public areas clean and tidy
  • Helping housekeeping, restaurant and banqueting staff to set up rooms or move furniture
  • Handling certain reception duties, such as booking theatre tickets or making restaurant reservations
  • Ensuring that bags and guests belongings are properly tagged and get to the right room
  • Assisting the room service staff on busy days
  • Parking guests’ cars and retrieving them as needed
  • Responding to guest requests and making sure they are comfortable throughout their stay
  • Running errands, Doing small jobs such as buying medicine for a client or picking up dry cleaning
  • Ensuring the safety of guests by, for instance, placing and removing signage that indicates wet floors or paint
